Pres. Boakai Appoints Acting Leadership at LEC
In a significant move aimed at strengthening the management of Liberia’s energy sector, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has appointed an acting leadership team for the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
The newly appointed officials are: Mr. Mohammed M. Sherif, Acting Managing Director, Mr. Eric Augustine B. Frederick, Acting Deputy Managing Director for Administration and Mr. Thomas Z. Gonkerwon, Acting Deputy Managing Director for Operations
These appointments take immediate effect and will remain in place until the nominees are formally confirmed by the Liberian Senate.
The Liberia Electricity Corporation plays a pivotal role in providing power to homes and businesses across the country.
However, the entity has faced persistent challenges, including power theft, infrastructure decay, and financial constraints. The new leadership is expected to bring stability and reforms to improve electricity supply and management.
President Boakai urged the newly appointed officials to serve with diligence, commitment, integrity, and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of loyalty to the country and delivering tangible results that benefit the Liberian people.
Liberians have long voiced concerns over unreliable electricity supply, high tariffs, and inconsistent billing practices. Many are hopeful that this leadership transition will bring about positive changes and improve service delivery.
Energy sector analysts suggest that the incoming team will need to urgently address pressing issues such as expanding access to affordable electricity, reducing commercial losses, and tackling widespread power theft, which has significantly affected LEC’s financial stability.
Mr. Mohammed M. Sherif, the new Acting Managing Director, brings extensive experience in energy sector management. His leadership will be crucial in ensuring that the state-run entity is positioned for efficiency and sustainability.
Observers note that this appointment is part of President Boakai’s broader strategy to reform key state institutions and enhance public service delivery.
The Liberian Senate is expected to conduct a thorough vetting process once the confirmation hearings commence. Until then, the acting leadership will be responsible for steering the corporation through this critical transition period.
