U.S. Backs Liberia UNSC Strongly

The United States has reaffirmed its confidence in Liberia’s global leadership ambitions following a high-level diplomatic engagement between U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Joe Zadrozny and Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti.

The meeting, held Tuesday, November 18, 2025 in Monrovia, focused on Liberia’s growing role in international affairs as it prepares to assume a historic seat on the United Nations Security Council in January 2026.

Chargé d’Affaires Zadrozny expressed delight in hosting Minister Nyanti, noting that the discussion was both timely and strategic given the geopolitical importance of the Security Council.

He praised Liberia’s increasing diplomatic engagement and its demonstrated commitment to peacebuilding and multilateral cooperation.

According to the U.S. Embassy, Liberia’s return to the Security Council its first since 1961 reflects global recognition of the West African nation’s progress in democratic governance and stability.

The United States said it welcomes Liberia's membership and looks forward to deepening collaboration at the UN level.

Minister Nyanti outlined Liberia’s diplomatic priorities, emphasizing conflict prevention, sustainable peace, regional stability, and strengthening global partnerships.

She assured the U.S. that Liberia intends to use its platform on the Security Council to advocate for vulnerable nations and promote international cooperation.

Zadrozny described Liberia’s approach as forward-looking, adding that Washington supports Monrovia’s renewed international presence.

He reiterated America’s commitment to working with Liberia on key global challenges, including peacekeeping, human rights, and development.

The meeting also highlighted Liberia’s growing influence within ECOWAS and the Mano River Union regional blocs that play critical roles in addressing emerging security and humanitarian threats in West Africa.

Diplomatic observers say the engagement signals Washington’s intention to partner closely with Liberia as the nation steps into a major global decision-making arena.

They note that Liberia’s Security Council membership offers a unique opportunity to bring African perspectives to some of the world’s most pressing crises.

Minister Nyanti also emphasized the importance of strengthening Liberia’s diplomatic corps and improving foreign service capacity as the country prepares to assume more responsibilities on the global stage.

The U.S. Embassy commended Liberia for maintaining its commitment to international diplomacy despite domestic challenges.

Zadrozny said Liberia’s ascent to the Security Council demonstrates the nation’s resilience and readiness to contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts.

He further assured Minister Nyanti that the United States will continue to support Liberia through technical cooperation, diplomatic coordination, and capacity-building initiatives that prepare the country for its expanded international role.

Analysts view the meeting as part of a broader effort by the United States to reinforce alliances with democratic partners across Africa at a time of rising geopolitical competition.

Liberia’s inclusion on the Security Council is expected to enhance its diplomatic visibility, allowing it to build new alliances and deepen existing partnerships with global powers.

Minister Nyanti expressed appreciation for the United States’ continued support, saying Liberia intends to demonstrate responsible leadership and uphold the principles of peace and cooperation at the UN.

As January 2026 approaches, both sides agreed to maintain close communication and coordination to ensure Liberia’s transition to the Security Council seat is smooth and impactful.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing mutual interests on the global stage.
