BOAKAI CELEBRATES LANDMARK FUEL BREAKTHROUGH: -LIBERIA RECLAIMS CONTROL OF ENERGY SECTOR AFTER 40 YEARS.

Monrovia, Liberia, July 29, 2025: In a bold stride toward national energy independence, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Monday toured the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) facilities on Bushrod Island, hailing the arrival of the country’s first state sponsored petroleum shipment in nearly 40 years as a “historic milestone.”
The President’s visit marked a turning point in Liberia’s petroleum sector as LPRC began discharging 10,000 metric tons of gasoline part of a groundbreaking state led fuel import initiative. An additional 8,000 metric tons of diesel is expected in the coming days, signaling a renewed commitment to fuel stability, affordability, and institutional self-sufficiency.
“This is what transformation looks like,” President Boakai declared at the LPRC jetty, where the consignment was being offloaded. “When visionary young professionals are empowered to lead, we get results. Managing Director Tweh represents the best of what Liberia’s future can be.”
The President also inspected two major infrastructure upgrades: a nearly completed 17,000 cubic meter gasoline storage tank and a cutting edge petroleum testing laboratory, both set to dramatically increase Liberia’s fuel storage capacity and quality control systems.
“These facilities are not just bricks and mortar,” Boakai said. “They are symbols of our commitment to institutional renewal and energy security. As long as this team continues to deliver, they can count on my full support.”
LPRC Managing Director Amos B. Tweh expressed gratitude to the President for the trust placed in the current management team, noting that this accomplishment was the result of strategic collaboration and unwavering dedication.

“This milestone belongs to the Liberian people,” said Tweh. “We are proud to be part of a movement that is transforming LPRC into a modern, transparent, and efficient public enterprise. The arrival of this shipment is only the beginning.”
Tweh reaffirmed the company's focus on execution over distraction. “There will always be politics,” he said. “But the work must go on. The ship is sailing, and we’re not stopping.”
Monday’s tour underscores the Boakai administration’s ARREST Agenda, which prioritizes Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism alongside strategic investments in state owned enterprises like LPRC.
The arrival of the fuel shipment and the nearing completion of key infrastructure projects mark a pivotal step toward national self-reliance in petroleum supply a feat not achieved since the early 1980s.
As Liberia looks to the future, the message from President Boakai is clear: performance, not politics, will drive progress.
