Liberia-China Strengthen $US14M Development Ties
The governments of Liberia and China have signed a historic agreement valued at 100 million Chinese yuan, approximately 14 million U.S. dollars.
The development cooperation agreement, formalized on Friday, January 9, 2026, is aimed at advancing Liberia’s national development agenda and fostering long-term, sustainable growth.
The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia, with the Government of Liberia represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and the People’s Republic of China represented by H.E. Yin Chengwu, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia.
The funding, which comes as a grant assistance, will support various development projects aligned with Liberia’s national priorities.
Minister Nyanti, in her remarks, expressed the deep gratitude of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the people of Liberia to the Government of China for their unwavering support.
She hailed the agreement as both timely and crucial, reinforcing the strong partnership between the two nations, which has been built on mutual respect and shared development goals.
Foreign Minister Nyanti described the agreement as a reaffirmation of the long-standing friendship between Liberia and China, emphasizing that it was based on a philosophy of mutual benefit, non-interference, and a shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity.
She highlighted that the new agreement would directly align with Liberia’s ongoing national development frameworks, particularly President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which focuses on achieving comprehensive national growth.
Ambassador Yin Chengwu, for his part, expressed strong satisfaction with the agreement, noting that it will provide critical support for development projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of ordinary Liberians.
He stressed that the funding would prioritize initiatives that strengthen the foundations for sustainable development while creating long-term value for Liberia’s people.
“The development cooperation agreement reflects the evolving China-Liberia partnership, and we are confident that it will inject new momentum into Liberia’s development efforts. It will help improve the livelihoods of ordinary citizens and further consolidate the strong ties between our two nations,” Ambassador Yin said.
The agreement outlines several priority areas for development cooperation, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agricultural advancement.
These sectors are central to Liberia’s development priorities and will play a pivotal role in creating jobs, improving access to essential services, and contributing to the overall economic growth of the country.
The funding will also support projects that aim to promote peace and stability, vital elements for Liberia's continued progress.
Both governments emphasized the importance of effective and practical development initiatives that focus on tangible outcomes and real-world impact.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior Liberian government officials, diplomats, and representatives from both the Chinese and Liberian governments.
The presence of high-ranking officials underscored the importance of the agreement in strengthening the bilateral relationship and fostering a stronger partnership between the two nations.
The gathering also served as a reminder of Liberia’s growing global alliances, with the agreement representing a key milestone in deepening cooperation with China, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.
The signing of this agreement marks a new chapter in the strong and enduring relationship between Liberia and China.
Both countries are poised to work together to unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity, with the shared goal of improving the quality of life for Liberians and contributing to regional and global stability.
Liberia moves forward with this partnership; the 100 million Chinese yuan development cooperation agreement is expected to play a key role in addressing the country’s development challenges.
With the continued support of China, Liberia is set to make significant strides towards achieving its long-term development goals
