Liberia Disowns Fake Middle East Statement
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned a fabricated statement circulating on social media that was falsely attributed to Ambassador Lewis Brown and purported to condemn recent military actions in the Middle East while expressing support for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In an official release issued Sunday, March 1, 2026, the Government of Liberia categorically rejected the claims, describing the statement as entirely inconsistent with Liberia’s established foreign policy posture and diplomatic practice.
“This statement is a deliberate fabrication and is entirely false,” the Ministry declared, distancing the Government from the unauthorized communication.
According to the Ministry, Liberia’s position on international issues including developments in the Middle East remains anchored in its longstanding commitment to peace, diplomacy, and constructive engagement.
The Government clarified that Liberia, currently serving as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council, has addressed Middle Eastern matters only once through a joint A3 statement delivered during the UNSC session on February 28, 2026.
Officials emphasized that no separate or unilateral statement has been issued either from Monrovia or by Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York concerning the matter.
The Ministry warned that the fabricated communication not only misrepresents Liberia’s official stance but also poses risks to the country’s diplomatic credibility and international relationships.
“Such reckless actions are dangerous for Liberia and its citizens both at home and abroad,” the statement noted, underscoring the potential consequences of misinformation in sensitive geopolitical contexts.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the fake statement and identify individuals responsible for disseminating the falsehood.
Security agencies, according to the Ministry, are actively tracing the source, with legal action anticipated against those found culpable.
The Government called on citizens, media institutions, and other stakeholders to exercise due diligence by verifying information before sharing it publicly.
Officials stressed that responsible reporting and fact-checking are essential to safeguarding national interests and preventing unnecessary confusion.
The Ministry further reiterated that Liberia’s diplomatic engagements remain guided by principles of neutrality, multilateral cooperation, and respect for international law.
Observers note that misinformation involving foreign policy positions can have significant ramifications, particularly when a country occupies a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The Government concluded by reaffirming its unwavering commitment to peaceful diplomacy and constructive collaboration with international partners, dismissing the viral statement as baseless and unauthorized.
