Liberia Heightens Ebola Surveillance Measures ……As New Outbreak Hits DRC

The Ministry of Health has officially placed Liberia on a state of heightened public health alert following the confirmation of a new outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In an official national health alert issued on May 16, 2026, health authorities assured the Liberian public that there are currently no confirmed Ebola cases within the country.

Despite the absence of confirmed infections, authorities say the government is taking immediate precautionary measures due to the devastating impact of the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic, which claimed thousands of lives in Liberia and severely weakened the nation’s healthcare system.

Officials noted that memories of the previous outbreak continue to shape Liberia’s public health preparedness and emergency response strategies.

According to the Ministry of Health, Liberia is now in a significantly stronger position to respond to infectious disease threats than it was during the Ebola crisis more than a decade ago.

“Liberia remains mindful of the impact Ebola previously had on the country, its people, and the health system,” the Ministry stated in the alert.

Health authorities explained that lessons learned from the earlier epidemic have reinforced the importance of rapid detection, immediate response, strong surveillance systems, and continuous community awareness.

Over the past ten years, Liberia has reportedly strengthened several aspects of its national disease prevention and response architecture.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia, disclosed that disease surveillance systems, laboratory capacity, border health monitoring, and healthcare worker training have all been significantly improved.

Authorities stated that enhanced disease surveillance mechanisms are now being activated at key health facilities and international points of entry across the country.

The government is also working closely with the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to strengthen preparedness and monitoring activities.

Health officials emphasized that public awareness and community cooperation remain critical components of Liberia’s Ebola prevention strategy.

According to the Ministry, Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected persons, contaminated surfaces, or infected animals.

Authorities also reminded the public that infected individuals cannot transmit the disease until symptoms begin to appear.

The Ministry identified major symptoms of Ebola as high fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and unexplained bleeding during advanced stages of infection.

As part of ongoing preparedness measures, public health teams are reportedly being deployed to communities to conduct awareness campaigns and educate citizens on prevention and early reporting procedures.

The Ministry of Health has urged Liberians to remain calm while maintaining strict adherence to preventive health measures aimed at reducing the risk of infection.

Citizens have been encouraged to regularly wash their hands with soap and clean water or use alcohol-based sanitizers, avoid direct contact with bodily fluids of sick individuals, and immediately report suspected illnesses to health authorities.

The government also warned the public against spreading misinformation and urged citizens to rely solely on official updates from the Ministry of Health and recognized public health institutions regarding developments surrounding the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
