Liberia Secures Major Honor at AUCER
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the appointment of distinguished Liberian academic and transitional justice expert, Dr. Aaron Weah, to the African Union Committee of Experts on Reparations (AUCER), marking a major diplomatic milestone for the country.
The appointment places Liberia at the center of continental efforts to address historical injustices, colonial harms, and the long-standing quest for reparative justice across Africa.
According to the Ministry, Dr. Weah’s selection signals Liberia’s deepening role in shaping policy on justice, accountability, and reconciliation within the African Union.
The move also reinforces the nation’s credibility as a leader in transitional justice, drawn from decades of its own post-conflict challenges and recovery efforts.
Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti expressed immense pride in nominating Dr. Weah on behalf of the Government of Liberia.
She described the appointment as both historic and strategic, noting that it positions Liberia to influence continental conversations on reparations and historical redress in a meaningful way.
Minister Nyanti said Dr. Weah represents the type of scholarship, professionalism, and integrity required to elevate Liberia’s voice in Africa’s push for reparations.
She extended warm congratulations to him and expressed confidence that he would serve as a strong ambassador for the country at the continental level.
She further emphasized that the achievement reflects Liberia’s growing leadership in global and African policy arenas.
The Minister said Liberia is ready to lend its experience from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process and ongoing justice reform efforts to help shape a unified African approach.
Minister Nyanti also encouraged Dr. Weah to make use of economic diplomacy as an added tool to strengthen Liberia’s influence within the African Union system.
She noted that the country’s participation in AUCER aligns with the government’s broader vision to expand Liberia’s international footprint.
The Ministry extended profound appreciation to the Regional Dean of West Africa and all member states within the regional bloc for endorsing Liberia’s nominee.
The endorsement, officials say, followed a series of constructive negotiations and reflects strong regional confidence in Liberia’s expertise.
In response, Dr. Weah expressed deep gratitude to Minister Nyanti and the Liberian government for recognizing his years of service in academia, civil society, and governance.
He described the appointment as a privilege and a responsibility he takes seriously.
Dr. Weah pledged to bring professionalism and rigorous scholarship to the committee’s work.
He affirmed his commitment to advancing Africa’s reparations agenda in a manner that is inclusive, research-driven, and reflective of the aspirations of African peoples globally.
The Liberian scholar also promised to collaborate effectively with fellow experts to develop a robust African Common Position on Reparations, one that takes into account both historical injustices and the contemporary challenges facing the continent.
With more than 18 years of experience, Dr. Weah is widely regarded as one of Liberia’s leading transitional justice thinkers.
His work has influenced national and regional dialogues on accountability, peace-building, and post-war recovery.
He previously contributed to transitional justice processes in both Liberia and The Gambia, offering technical support and scholarly insight.
In 2023, he joined an international delegation of experts in Accra, Ghana to push for a unified African stance on reparations for Africa and its diaspora.
Dr. Weah currently serves as Director of the Ducor Institute for Social and Economic Research, a Liberian think tank dedicated to evidence-based public policy.
He also teaches at the University of Liberia and the Foreign Service Institute, where he mentors aspiring diplomats and scholars.
His academic contributions include publications in respected journals such as the Oxford University Press International Journal of Transitional Justice.
He also co-published the influential work Impunity Under Attack, which analyzes the evolution and challenges of Liberia’s TRC process.
The Ministry restated its full support for Dr. Weah and reaffirmed Liberia’s readiness to contribute effectively to the African Union’s reparations agenda.
AUCER, established by AU leaders under Decision 847, is tasked with developing an African Common Position on Reparations and a continental programme of action involving member states, regional blocs, civil society, and experts.
