Pres. Boakai Jets to Washington for Trump’s Exclusive Africa Summit

In a major diplomatic development, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. departed Liberia on Monday morning, July 7, 2025, for a high-level working visit to Washington, D.C., United States of America, where he will represent Liberia at the exclusive U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit hosted by President Donald J. Trump.

President Boakai is among just five African Heads of State invited to the prestigious summit, signaling Liberia’s rising prominence in global affairs under the Boakai administration.

The summit, scheduled to run from July 7 to 11 at the White House, seeks to strengthen ties between the United States and Africa’s most promising partners in diplomacy, security, and investment.

The leaders of Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, and Senegal are the only other African nations invited, adding to the significance of Liberia’s participation.

The event will feature bilateral and multilateral discussions aimed at boosting trade, advancing democratic governance, and enhancing joint security cooperation.

According to the Executive Mansion, President Boakai will engage in a series of closed-door meetings with President Trump and top U.S. officials on matters ranging from economic development and regional security to energy investment, anti-corruption strategies, and democratic consolidation.

A central theme of the summit will be the transition from aid to trade an economic strategy long championed by both U.S. policymakers and African reformers.

For Liberia, the visit comes at a time of renewed investor interest following the signing of a $1.8 billion concession deal with U.S.-based Ivanhoe Atlantic Inc.

The President is accompanied by a high-powered delegation comprising senior government officials and technocrats who will participate in technical sessions and side meetings with U.S. agencies, private investors, and international development partners.

The official delegation includes Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan, National Security Advisor Samuel K. Woods II, Retired Major General Daniel Ziankahn, NIC Chairman Jeff Bilbo, Director General of Cabinet Nathaniel Kwabo, and Special Envoy Bedell Sandi.

Also accompanying the President are teams from the Protocol, Communications, and Executive Security divisions, ensuring a coordinated and effective diplomatic representation during the summit.

Sources within the Foreign Ministry suggest that Liberia will use the summit to lobby for renewed development assistance in health and education, as well as infrastructure financing under U.S. programs such as Power Africa and Prosper Africa.

“This is about more than photo ops. This is a rare chance for Liberia to seal long-term bilateral commitments, attract high-level attention, and promote the country as a stable destination for investment,” said an analyst.

While President Boakai is away, the Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh, will chair Cabinet meetings in consultation with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and maintain regular contact with the President via secure communication.

The summit is also expected to address global security threats, with Liberia hoping to secure technical and material support to bolster national security and anti-terrorism efforts amid rising regional instability in parts of West Africa.

As anticipation builds around the President’s engagements in Washington, many Liberians at home are watching closely to see whether the summit will yield tangible results in job creation, trade facilitation, and development financing.

President Boakai is expected to return to Liberia on July 11, immediately following the close of the summit.

His visit marks another milestone in the Administration’s stated foreign policy goal of “rebuilding global alliances and promoting Liberia as a trusted international player.”

Observers say this U.S. visit is likely to be followed by other strategic diplomatic tours in the coming months, as the Boakai administration ramps up its international engagement efforts and seeks to cement Liberia’s role in shaping Africa’s 21st-century transformation.
