President Boakai Grants Holiday Clemency to 72 Inmates
Monrovia, Liberia : In a powerful gesture of reconciliation and hope during the Christmas season, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has exercised his constitutional authority to grant Executive Clemency to seventy-two (72) eligible inmates across Liberia, reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to justice tempered with compassion.
The clemency, which takes immediate effect, includes pardons and commutations for inmates who have demonstrated good conduct, genuine remorse, and meaningful rehabilitation while incarcerated.
The decision followed a rigorous review of recommendations submitted through established legal and correctional channels.
President Boakai described the action as a reflection of the values that define the season forgiveness, restoration, and national healing while maintaining respect for the rule of law.
“This act of clemency is not a negation of justice,” the President stated. “Rather, it affirms our belief in rehabilitation, human dignity, and the possibility of reform. Mercy, when guided by law, has the power to restore lives and strengthen families.”
Who Benefited
Of the 72 individuals granted clemency:
• 70 are Liberian nationals and 2 are citizens of the Republic of Guinea
• 70 are male and 2 are female
• Two beneficiaries are juveniles
• All were convicted of non-capital felony offenses
Careful consideration was given to inmates who had served more than 50 percent of their sentences, those who had completed their terms but remained incarcerated due to minor restitution obligations, as well as elderly inmates and prisoners suffering from terminal illnesses.
Strict Eligibility Applied
The Executive Mansion emphasized that strict eligibility criteria were enforced. No inmate convicted of capital or notorious crimes was considered. All beneficiaries exhibited exemplary behavior and demonstrated readiness for reintegration into society.
A Call to Responsibility
President Boakai urged the recipients to embrace their second chance with responsibility and discipline, calling on them to live law-abiding lives and contribute positively to Liberia’s development.
“This opportunity must be matched with renewed commitment to peace, lawful conduct, and national service,” the President cautioned.
Beyond the clemency, President Boakai reaffirmed his Administration’s determination to pursue justice and corrections reforms aimed at strengthening rehabilitation, reducing repeat offenses, and ensuring fairness and efficiency in the justice system.
He also appealed to all Liberians to reflect on the broader meaning of the season by embracing unity, forgiveness, and shared national responsibility.
As the nation celebrates the holidays, the President’s decision stands as a symbolic and practical reminder that while justice must be upheld, mercy remains a vital pillar of a humane and reconciled society.
